In a speech Maria Vamvakinou addressed the Australian Parliament on multiculturalism. She accused the two major parties-the Labor government and the Liberal – National Coalition for the abandonment of multiculturalism. Vamvakinou called on the Federal Parliament to pass a specific law which will recognize multicultural policy as a state policy.
During her speech Vamvakinou referred to the benefits that Australia could gain through multiculturalism. “It is time…to declare an end to hostile actions against multiculturalism. We left the field open to its enemies, without any arguments”.
Vamvakinou was born in Lefkada and moved to Australia as a child with her family. She underlined that the Federal Parliament must follow the example of nations where there is support towards multiculturalism from all major political forces and to regulate the issue from a legal perspective.
