New Survey: 1/11 Greeks Below Poverty Level

Almost one in eleven Greek citizens make use of the soup kitchen or other forms of welfare for the poor due to the crisis.  This statistic resulted from a survey carried out by the University of Athens.
Seven months after the introduction of the austerity plan and with unemployment at 12%, the survey was conducted on 1200 people.  The subjects were from the  Attica region and published by Elefterotipia newspaper.  It revealed that 8.7% of citizens older than 18 use subsidised meals, social stores and other forms of welfare. Of this group, 2.3% need this support regularly, 3.1% often and 3.3% occasionally. A total of 92% of the Greek population have cut spending on food due to the crisis and 54% need support from outside the family.
According to the NGO Greek Network Against Poverty, 25% of Greeks live below the poverty threshold of 470 euros per month. This percentage could soon rise to 30% as a consequence of wage and pension cuts and rising unemployment levels.
