Public Sector Umbrella Union ADEDY Schedules October 7th Strike

Greece’s public sector umbrella union ADEDY said Tuesday that it has called for a mass 24 hour strike on Oct. 7th.  This is on the eve of a hearing in Greece’s highest administrative court of a legal challenge by unions and bar associations against the deal that secured loans.  The strike is in protest to overturn recent austerity measures.
Greek unions have staged repeated paralyzing strikes on the debt strapped country since May.  The nation has imposed tax hikes and slashed wage and pensions in exchange for a EUR110 billion bailout package from the International Monetary Fund and the European Union.
“With the objective of overturning the IMF-EU memorandum and cancel out measures for the reduction of wages and pensions, to protect retirement entitlements, and prevent poverty and the destruction of Greek society, we are calling a 24-hour Greece-wide strike on October 7,” ADEDY said in a statement.
The union is encouraging wide spread participation from workers at the protest rallies to be held that day.
