“Plato’s Academy” Premiers in over 40 German Cities

Filippos Tsitos’ movie “Plato’s Academy” is being screened in more than 40 German cities. During the premiers the director is present and answers questions from the audience.

For example, Thalia Cinemas in Potsdam.

The movie “Plato’s Academy” has just finished. The applause and discussion with the director reveails that the audience approves the movie.
“A wonderful movie without sex and violence. I was really surprised”, says a spectator. As it is known, the movie which was awarded in the Locarno Festival, takes place in the Plato’s Academy area in Athens. The scenario is about xenophobia. Stavros the leading role, is a fanatic Greek that learns that he is probably of Albanian origin. As the director explains, Stavros grew up with knowing that he is a descendant of Socrates and Alexander the Great. His origin was his identity. That’s why he was xenophobic and why he is shocked when he learns about his Albanian origin.
Now he has to face the new situation. He and his Greek friends that do not accept him anymore.

A German spectator stated after the movie:
“I was surprised when Stavros’ friends learned about his origin and their behavior changed. This is a general reaction. We have seen it many times before, for example in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Friends turned into opponents. So, the movie it’s not absolutely Greek.”

At the age of twenty five Filippos Tsitos came to Berlin with his parents to study cinematography. “When you are far away from your home, you can see many things more calmly. You can see that things are not black and white but grey. You can also see the negative elements of your character, of your people, of your country .”

“Something negative in Greeks in my movie is their laziness. And that worries the German spectators now, with the financial crisis”, says Filippos Tsitos. “But the people I present in my movie do not cheat or live against others. They are simply lazy”.
