Euripides’ “Alcestis” in Manhattan

The American Thymele Theatre, founded by the famous actor Stephen Diacrussi, presented July 6-10, five performances of Euripedes’ Alcestis in three theatres in Manhattan. Lorca Perres was the director and the cast was including actors from the American Equity.

The performances in the three central theatres were very successful, especially this in the Marilyn Monroe Theatre. The entrance was free, as in the ancient Greece. The first performance was in East River Park Amphitheatre, next to the river, with Alcestis’ words translated in English by the Hellenist professor Richmond Lattimore. The first photos with the American Thymele Theatre’s founder, Stephen Diacrussi, and scenes from the performance already exist. Costumes and masks are by Maria Niora and the music by Kostas Kouris.

In the playbill there was a review of the ancient text and the words of Euripides in the English language captivated the Greek-Americans.

There were many positive reviews about the Stephen Diakrussi’s initiative and Lorca Perres’ direction.

The performances were mainly sponsored by the Greek Community of New York.
