Photographer Chris Makos’ Upcoming Book: Lady Warhol

Chris Makos is not simply a photographer. He is owner and operator of a creative and intuitive brain that soaked in and spat out the brilliant education that was gained by living, breathing, and surrounding himself with some of the most interesting icons of our time.

Makos, an American artist and descendant from a Greek family, was once apprentice to the notorious Man Ray, as well as a friend and documentarian of the icon, Mr. Andy Warhol. The learnings he gains from Man Ray’s style paired with a raw curiosity resulted in the successful execution of his “Altered Image” project. In 1981 Makos took black and white portraits of a Warhol in drag, exploring his identity and sense of gender self-image.

Revisiting those images today, Makos shares in a statement on his personal website:

“…They are a sort of a show and tell about identity, and changing identity, not really drag, not really Andy in drag, not really even Andy Warhol any more, but a record of the collaboration between the two of us: poser and picture taker. That’s it.”

This September, full page prints of those images will be compiled in Makos’ latest book, Lady Warhol, along with Makos’ original contact sheet and an essay on his personal friendship with Warhol.

It’s has also been announced by the Hilton Brothers, Chris Makos and Paul Soleberg, the official launch of the book will be during their US debut of the critically acclaimed exhibit, Andy Dandy.

Lady Warhol will be published by La Fabrica Madrid and Andy Dandy will run from September 9th through October 3, 2010 in New York City, hosted by the Clic Gallery and Christiane Celle.
