Marilena Koppa, MEP for the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (Pasok) denounced to the Plenary session of the European Parliament Turkey’s new outrageous action in the North Aegeanseaside area. The Turkish naval research ship, Cesme, was continuing to encroach on Greece’s continental shelf area in the northern Aegean, the stretch of seabed where Athens claims the rights for exploration and exploitation of potential mineral and fossil fuel deposits.
” Turkey as a candidate member of EU is obliged to share EU values and goals as the Treaties determine. Therefore, its commitment for having relations of good neighborhood is of great importqance as repeatedly has been asked by the European Parliament and Council. But we need a commitment that will not be only words but deeds.
Turkey, the 30th of June went through a new outrageous action in the Northern Aegean seaside area, inside the Greek insular shelf. The Turkish naval research ship, Cesme, was sailing 13 miles to the North of Samothrace and 10 miles from the coast of Thrace, without having informed the Greek side on its route and its activities.
The amelioration of the bilateral relations is to both Greece’s and Turkey’s benefit. The Turkish leaders have during the last period stated their interest for improving the Greek-Turkish relations. But the systematic violation of the territorial waters and the Greek aerospace set unanswerable inquirements concenring the sincerity of Turkish intentions.
For one more time, from this podium, I would like to call the competent EU organizations to send a clear message to Ankara for this unusual behavior”
