D. Christofias asks for the return of Famagusta from Turkey

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Dimitris Christofias calls Turkey to return the fenced town of Famagusta (Varosha), in return for readdressing some of the chapters from the accession negotiations between Ankara and the European Union.

The message was addressed by Mr. Christofias to Ankara through the Turkish Chief EU Negotiator, Egemen Bagis, with whom he had a discussion a few days ago in Brussels at the EU summit in Brussels.

“Turkey will not be allowed to proceed unhindered in its accession, as it will always find ahead of it the unresolved Cypriot issue” stated Christofias, adding that “If the proposal for Famagusta is accepted and the city is returned to the United Nations, then the port can be open, under the auspices of the European Union”

With regards to the issue of direct negotiations, the Cypriot President noted that if the Turkish side comes forth with a changed outlook, there is a chance for resolution by December.

“If Turkey has decided that it is time to resolve the Cypriot issue and not playing communication games, then a result will be achieved”, noted Mr. Christofias, stressing that “the many key aspects of the problem have not been discussed yet, but the Greek Cypriot side wishes to move forward with everything else, leaving only the chapter regarding Security”.

Lastly, he underlined that “Turkey is facing serious problems, as it stands just before the referendum, in open war with the Kurds, whilst the percentages of the party in power are going down.”
