According to Chrysanthos Petsilas the director of the Hellenic Tourism Organization in America, during the last weeks there has been an attempt to attract tourists from America, despite the sad fact of the assassination of 3 persons in May that created an adverse climate.
“Despite the financial crisis, the cancellations as well as the freezing in the reservations in May, we ascertain a recovery of the tourist marker and we expect the same level as last year” said Mr. Pitsilas adding also that “the mobilization of the Greeks of Diaspora and the Greek Mass Media contributed to marginalize to a large extent the negative consequences of the adverse American Media for our country’s situation”.
During an event that took place in the Foundation “Alexander Onassis” in Manhattan, the tourist campaign of the hotel association “Starwood Hellas” was presented, together with the new advertising campaign of EOT which has as central motto “You in Greece”. In this event, many representatives of important travel operators in USA, American journalists covering tourist issues as wells as travel agents were present.
“Starwood Hellas” consists of ten very luxurious hotels in Greece.
Mr. Petsilas also said that “the messages we received are that Greece still remains a very popular destination and we can also see a small but encouraging increase in travelling due to the initiatives that take place. All these encourage us that we will finally save the year”.
The Greek-American, Peter Vlitas, vice-president of the “ProTravel Intrenational”, one of the most important American companies that sale luxurious vacation packages and co-operates with the “Starwood Hellas”, said that the event is a great opportunity to present certain of its great hotels such as “Grande Bretagne”.
