Heavier fines for smokers.

The minister of Health and Social Solidarity Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou announced thatĀ  smoking in all closed public areas will be banned from the 1st of September. The fines for the lawbreakers will be up to 500 euros for the individuals and up to 10.000 for the companies. More specifically, asĀ  far as the individuals are concerned the fines will be from 50 euros to 500 euros and forĀ  businnesses the fines will be even heavier from 500 to 10.000 euros. Parallel, an extension is given to the casinos and the establishments with live music till the 31/ 5/ 2011 in order for them to abide by the law. The prohibition will be “total” and as the Minister underlined, chinks do not exist. It is an effort to keep clean the environment and the atmosphere in all public areas and Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou confirmed that severe checkings will take place. During the summer a big campaign for theĀ  information of the public on the effects of smoking in our health will take place as well as on the new law that will be implemented from September. Heavy fines concern also the advertisers of smoke products as well as those who sell smoke to juveniles.
