International Meeting for the “Greek Language” in Thessaloniki

From the 28th to 30th of june 2010, the International Work Meeting for “the Greek Language and the linguistic action” will take place in Thessaloniki. 65 Greek and foreign experts will participate in this meeting, among whom R. Hunter, the royal professor of Ancient Greek in Cambridge, the professors David Holton (Cambridge), H. Tonnet (INALCO of Paris), V. Gonzalez (University of Malaga) Lucia Marcheselli (University of Tergest), M. Fantuzzi (Colymbia USA) etc.
This closed Work Meeting is conducted by the Centre of the Greek Language, an institution of research and applications which is also a consultative organization of the Ministry fro Education concerning issues of linguistic action and policy. Organized in seven round tables, the meeting will cover thoroughly important aspects of the language and the linguistic action. More specifically, teaching of Modern Greek as a mother tongue, Greek Language and Mass Media, Ancient Greek in Greece, teaching of Modern Greek in the education of the Greeks abroad, teaching of Modern Greek as a second and foreign language to adults, teaching of Modern Greek as a second language to students (in Greece), Modern Greek in the Third Level Education.
Great emphasis will be given to three major works of the Centre: the promotion of the “Certificate of the knowledge of Greek” as a tool for the Greek language to be known abroad, the “Routes”, a system of long-distance education of “teacher of Modern Greek as a foreign language abroad” and finally the incorporation of New Technologies in the teaching of language (“Gate for the Greek Language”: www. Greek-language.gr)
The International Work Meeting is under the aegis of the Ministry of Education, as the Minister Anna Diamantopoulou gives great importance to this meeting for the national strategy concerning the language. However, showing the same interest, higher officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Culture are participating in the meeting.
In addition, great personalities such as: the Professors Emeritus of classical philology D. Maronitis of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and F. Kakridis (University of Ioannina), the former President of Athens Academy, classical philologist N. Konomis, the President of the Council of Greek Emigrants St. Tamvakis and several
Scientific members of the pedagogical institute.
Finally, in this international work meeting, the potential establishment of a new institution, the “National Council for the Language”, is to be discussed.
