Chinese vice Premier Contacts in Athens

Chinese vice Premier Zhang Dejiang –accompanied by members of the Ministers’ Council- paying an official visit to Athens to promote economic relations between the two countries. He was received by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Karolos Papoulias at noon and next met with Prime-minister George Papandreou who hosted a dinner in his honour. The Chinese vice-premier met with his Greek counterpart Thodoros Pagalos in the morning while representatives of the two countries held a meeting where 14 agreements-mainly concerning the fields of Merchant Marine, Tourism, Telecommunications and olive oil exports- were signed. In the afternoon, Mr. Dejiang will meet with main opposition ND leader A. Samaras and will conclude his tour of Greece with a visit to Heraklio, in the island of Crete.
14 Agreements Signed
The Chinese vice-premier and his Greek counterpart Thodoros Pagalos signed 14 agreements mainly concerning the fields of Merchant Marine, Tourism, Telecommunications and olive oil exports.
• 1-The first agreement signed was the Understanding and Cooperation Memorandum in the Marine sector. It was signed by Economics, Competitiveness and Merchant Marine Minister Louka Katselis and the Chinese Transport Minister. The agreement provides beneficial affreightment status for Greek Merchant Marine.
• 2-The next four agreements concerned construction or intention for construction of Greek ships in COSCO shipyards and were signed between Greek ship-owners and COSCO shipyard Co.
• 3-Another agreement provides for the setting up of consortium and two affreightment agreement signed by COSCO Bulk Carrier representative and Greek ship owners.
• 4-Cooperation agreement was also signed in the Telecommunications field –between OTE and Huawei Technologies.
• 5-Agreement for the construction of commercial and hotel complex Piraeus Plaza by BCEGI and Helios Plaza.
• 6- Finally 4 agreements on olive-oil exports were also signed.
Chinese vice Premier Zhang Dejiang, in his statements, said he was convinced the Greek government would overcome the financial crisis to the benefit and prosperity of the Greek people, underlining that the cooperation of the two sides is included in the framework to deal with the crisis.
Mr. Dejiang said he had a very friendly discussion with Thodoros Pagalos adding he encouraged Chinese businessmen to invest in Greece and cooperate with Greek businesses. He asked reporters to help Greek-Chinese cooperation with the projection of these agreements.
Reports say that they discussed intra-state agreements such as the Thriasio transit center , research and technology issues , tourism, construction of infrastructure such as the Tymbaki port on the island of Crete.
In the evening, Thodoros Pagalos will host dinner in honour of the Chinese vice-premier.
