Why plane tickets to Greece have reached a record high now?

Greek-Americans are a group of people who have contributed a great deal to Greek tourism, especially during hard economic times. Summertime has arrived and most Greek-Americans are ready to visit their homeland once again, and hoping to give the much needed boost to Greek economy. With the euro at a four-year low against the U.S. dollar today; everybody would think that there is nothing to stop us from going to Greece, except airline rates. Those who are afraid of flying may develop more fears after seeing the prices of the plane tickets to Greece. A search on Expedia or other travel sites will reveal that the average price for a ticket from a major US city (Los Angeles, New York, Chicago) to Greece ranges from 1500$ to 1600$.

The airlines have a lot of expenses and provide a vital service to make our world smaller place, but it is really difficult to understand why they would double their prices  just because of the summer season to a destination that has been loosing popularity all year. These high fares may turn people away from visiting Greece that would have otherwise visited the country. Besides Greece, this will also have a negative impact on the airlines which will send planes with empty seats to the Mediterranean.

Considering it is still only the beginning of summer; I hope that airlines will reduce the cost of flying to Greece, and will come up with more attractive packages for consumers.
