A taste of Greece at Adelphi University…

Adelphi University Hellenic Society hosted an event about Greece at the University Center in Garden City, last Tuesday (photo).
Members of the Hellenic Society presented videos and pictures from Greece and highlighted Greeceā€™s contribution to the west civilization as well as the importance of Greek values in everyday life.

Students Katerina Spanopoulou (president), Vicky Karatzias (vice president), Katerina Pougiouklides (Secretary), Harry Zikos (treasurer), Aris Kourkoumelis, Melina Giakoumis and Panagiotis Lafatzis (newly elected president) presented topics on Greek mythology, philosophy, archaeology, civilization, language and nutrition.
The pictures shown were provided by the head of the GNTO (Greek National Tourism Organisation) offices in the US, Mr. Chrysanthos Petsilas. Greek dishes were offered and Greek music was playing. Demetris Monias, a student, was the DJ.
The event attended also the President of the Education Committee of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE), Ms Stella Kokoli, who praised the work being done at the American Universities bringing out the value of the Greek culture and Greek language education. ā€œItā€™s not Greek to youā€ said the President of the Hellenic Society to the audience. ā€œYou speak Greek every day through the English language and employing the Greek Culture, as Greek values were incorporated to the American Culture, since the establishment of the countryā€.
Aris Kourkoumelis analyzed the myth of Platoā€™s Cave. Melina Giakoumis shared her experience participating in Dr. Anagnostis Angelarakisā€™ excavations in Eleftherna of Crete. Katerina Pougiouklides stressed out the importance of Greek Mythology and Panayotis Lafatzis referred to the visions, the future and activities of the Society.
The students impressed their audience and especially their parents. The prominent entrepreneur Mr. Kourkoumelis, overwhelmed by the presentations of the students, suggested the hosting of joint events among neighboring Hellenic Student Societies.
