Greek Pride in Boston and Chicago

The 16th annual Greek Independence Day Parade took over Boston yesterday, as more than 57 groups marched down Boylston Street to the Boston Common for live music, dancing and food.
“It’s just one huge party,” said Eleni Vidalis, president of the Federation of Hellenic American Societies of New England. “The Common goes Greek.”
Vidalis said the parade commemorates three things this year: the Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire, the Battle of Marathon, and “pride in being Greek in a country we’ve learned to call home, the United States of America.”

Thousands of Greek Americans and other Chicago residents lined the sidewalks of Halsted Street in Chicago’s Greek Town on Sunday April 25, 2010 for the annual Greek Independence Day Parade organized by the Federation of Hellenic-American Organizations of Illinois “Enosis.” The Parade started at 3:30 p.m. central time, following a doxology service and brief reception for the Parade Grand Marshals, constituents in the Greek American Community, and local U.S. officials.
