Cairo: A great concert by Lakis Chalkias marks the beginning of the «Days of Greek Culture»

In one of the greatest and most historical theatres in Cairo, Gomhouria theatre, Lakis Halkias unfolded the stages of Greek music, since 500 B.C. until today, covering two and a half millennia of our musical tradition, in front of a large audience, marking the beginning of “Days of Greek Culture”, a week dedicated to Greek culture which started on Wednesday evening and is jointly organized by Greece and Egypt.
The main bodies responsible for the organisation of the events are the Greek Embassy, the Greek Community of Cairo and the Greek Cultural Centre of Cairo, supported by the Greek and Egyptian Ministry of Culture, proving once more that there are common cultural bonds between the two nations, through the ages.

On this common cultural course of the two countries, spoke the 1st Deputy Minister of Egypt, Hosam Nassar, noting that “when the two cultures of Greece and Egypt meet, it is as if the whole world comes together”.

During the presentation of the event, whereby the audience was granted with some of the best compositions of Byzantine music, as well as traditional music and songs from Asia Minor and folk music, a touching moment took place when children from the choirs of the Greek schools of Cairo, Achilopouleios and Abetios School took part.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Greece, was represented by Nikos Lenos, the Head of the Department of Hellenes Abroad. Furthermore, many representatives of the Greek Diaspora attended the event, among which the President of the Greek Community of Cairo, Christos Kavalis, representatives of diplomatic and community authorities, artists, educators and many others.

The event was concluded in the historic Association of Alumni of Abeteios School, where representatives of the community welcomed Lakis Chalkias, who “enchanted” the audience with his melodies.
