Oakleigh receives $90,000 boost

L-R Victorian Treasurer John Lenders visited Oakleigh to discuss the suburb's Greek identity
Monash Council receives funding through the Melbourne 2030 Expert Assistance Program for the development of Oakleigh
Oakleigh will see further development and enhancement of its public open spaces, thanks to a $90,000 State Government grant.
The funding is made available to Monash Council through the Melbourne 2030 Expert Assistance Program and is designed to assist councils with specialist expert and technical advice on preparing detailed design plans for the future development and enhancement of Oakleigh Village.
Member of Parliament for Oakleigh, Ann Barker, joined with Victorian Treasurer, John Lenders, in the Oakleigh shopping centre last Friday to inspect the area expected to benefit. Joining the Treasurer and Local State Member were the Mayor of Monash, Councillor Charlotte Baines, and Councillors Stephen Dimopoulos and Stefanie Perri.
The visit concluded with a coffee and refreshments at Vanilla, which saw discussion about how further planning of the growing cultural identity of the Oakleigh shopping area could be recognised.
“The Oakleigh shopping centre and particularly the Eaton mall area has certainly changed over recent years,” said Mr. Lenders, “with the welcome increase in quality restaurants and cafes which are now contributing to the economic, employment and social growth for the local area.”
Ms Barker said that she welcomed an opportunity to brief the Treasurer on the future planning for the Oakleigh shopping centre and join him at Vanilla with the Mayor of Monash and local Councillors.
“The Oakleigh shopping area now has a vibrant cafe culture, thanks largely to the Greek community in particular. I’m sure we can continue to develop both the cultural identity and economic growth for Oakleigh.”
