Greek opera cancels German concerts to save money

The Greek national opera has been forced to cancel performances at a German music festival next month so as to save money in the cash strapped country, a spokeswoman for the opera said on Thursday.
“We have no economic margin to allow us to travel abroad, even for the very important Wiesbaden festival,” the spokeswoman said.
The opera company was due to perform Giacomo Puccini’s La Boheme and Richard Strauss’s Ariadne aux Naxos on May 7-8.
“Our finances are at their lowest and we already cancelled a tour in March in Liverpool” in Britain, the spokeswoman said.
The Greek national opera now has no foreign dates planned for 2010 as several productions planned for the autumn have also been scrapped.
