Body of former Greek Cypriot president found after three months

TassosPolice in Cyprus say they may have found the stolen corpse of former president Tassos Papadopoulos, whose body was snatched from his grave three months ago.
The body of Mr Papadopoulos, who died in December 2008, was stolen from his grave last December.
The culprits had removed it from his casket and carefully covered their tracks.
The site where police were conducting inquiries on Monday evening was at a cemetery in a neighbouring community to that where Mr Papadopoulos was buried.
“Acting on a tip, a corpse was found at a cemetery with indications so far suggesting it may belong to the former Cyprus president,” police spokesman Michalis Katsounodos said.
DNA testing was required for identification to be conclusive, he said.
Police were alerted to the site by an anonymous caller. A reporter saw relatives of the former president in the area, a relatively new cemetery close to a key road intersection leading into Nicosia, the island’s capital. Police were mainly focussing on one grave, the reporter said.
The state-run Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation said police were investigating the possibility the corpse had been transferred to the new cemetery in the past few days.
There was no claim of responsibility for the theft and the motives were unclear.
Mr Papadopoulos was president from 2003 to February 2008, when he lost to Demetris Christofias, a former coalition partner.
Mr Papadopoulos died of lung cancer later that year.
