Greek-Americans call for protection of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew

Greek-Americans have been writing letters to the US President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, urging the protection of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, following reactions in Turkey caused by the Patriarch’s statements about “daily crucifixion” in that country. Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of 300 million Orthodox Christians, who constitute the second largest Christian Church in the world, made the statements in an interview with the CBS News program “60 Minutes” broadcast earlier this week throughout the United States, and globally on the Internet.
Both the American Archdiocese, as well as the so-called Greek lobby in the United States call for the Greek Orthodox prelate to be protected after negative reactions to the statement by the Turkish Foreign minister Achmet Davutoglu and that country’s ultra rightwing movements.
