It is unlikely to be every parent’s idea of a future for their child, even if it did give the nation a collective chuckle.
But Demetrios Demetriou is so confident of the success of the Stavros Flatley dance duo that swept to fame in Britain’s Got Talent that he has pulled the other half – his son – out of school.
Lagi, 14, will be taught by a private tutor for a year, with encouragement from the boy’s headmaster.
It is an attempt by Greek-Cypriot Mr Demetriou to maximise the potential of their recent brush with fame.
The pair came to the nation’s attention on the talent show with their bare-chested spoof of Riverdance, which was a comedy hybrid of Greek and Irish dancing.
Mr Demetriou said yesterday: ‘We didn’t realise it was going to be like this. We went into the programme as a bit of fun.
‘Now it is turning into a bit of a career for us.’
The pair have switched on the Christmas lights in ten different towns and cities around the UK, and made an appearance on Ready, Steady, Cook last week.
They are also popular for corporate events and parties and their fee per show runs into thousands.
Mr Demetriou wants to ensure the publicity lasts as long as possible. ‘We know it is not going to last forever. I just feel if you can you should leave a bit of a footprint,’ he said.
He said pulling his son out of school for a year was a hard decision.
But he added: ‘We are making enough to put away for his future. He has got the rest of his life. He can study till he is 25 if he wants.’
In an interview with Nicky Campbell on Radio 5 Live’s Breakfast-show the 40-year-old restaurateur claimed his son’s headmaster had advised him to take the boy out of school for a year.
‘His master said to us, “you can’t let this opportunity go [let him] take a year out”,’ he said.
Lagi is now being homeschooled in order to capitalise on all the requests for public appearances.
Mr Demetriou also revealed their comedy dance routine was dreamt up to entertain diners at their family restaurant.
He explained: ‘Ten years ago I owned a Greek restaurant. I needed a finale to get people dancing. Michael Flatley was big at the time so I decided to give it a go.’
