Greeks At the Grammys
Performers of Greek descent are participating and nominated for this year’s Grammys. Kelly Clarkson is up for a Grammy in the category “Best Pop Vocal Album”. Also, Alexandra Patsavas, Golden Globe winner Alexandre Desplat, and Yolanda Kondonassis are nominated for awards.


On Monday an Australian national of Greek descent who has been accused of stealing a $1 million ring from a Melbourne jeweler in March 2009 will face court on extradition charges following his arrest in Pattaya last October. Investigations revealed that the suspect George Georgiou had fled to Thailand after having stolen various items of jewelry from the Hardy Brothers Jewelers in Melbourne. Georgiou has stated that he is innocent.
Haiti – Greek Rescuers pulled a man alive from the rubble on Saturday 11 days after Haiti’s devastating earthquake, raising hopes of finding more survivors even after the government called off search efforts. His family eventually alerted a Greek rescue team to his cries deep under the remains of the shop he was working for.
Internationally acclaimed artist Ginés Serrán will make a grand declaration of peace when he unveils the world’s largest bronze sculpture of Classical Mythology, “The Union of the World: Monument to World Peace,” on January 23rd in Miami. The creation of the sculpture and the prestigious ceremony are sponsored by Evangeline Gouletas, a Greek-American real estate legend and philanthropist.
It is estimated that there were around 15 Greek citizens in Haiti during the biblical earthquake. On the island there is also a small number of people of Greek descent. All of them are in good health but fear for epidemics is the strongest fear.
Thousands gathered in the small city of Tarpon Springs, Florida to attend the immersion of the cross. The city is well known for two things: Sponges and the Epiphany. Both came about due to the town’s large Greek population. Festivities in honor of the Epiphany took place the last three days. Following Greek tradition, on Epiphany Day, Archbishop Demitrios threw the holy cross into the water for the best diver to retrieved it. The Orthodox Church celebrates Epiphany on January 6th of each year, in remembrance of the baptism of our Jesus Christ in the Jordan River.
